SAN FRANCISCO’S GUERRILLA REP & MAMA CALIZO'S VOICE FACTORY
PRESENT THE WORLD PREMIERE OF
STRINGS
MAY 14 - JUNE 6, 2009

SAN FRANCISCO (April 28, 2009) – Guerrilla Rep presents the world premiere of Strings, a "bromantic dramedy" written by Terrence Beswick and directed by John Caldon.

Strings plays May 14 - June 6 (Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays) at Mama Calizo's Voice Factory at 1519 Mission Street in San Francisco. (Press opening is May 14 at 8 pm).

In Strings, Juan Carlos De La Rosa (hotshot) and Michael Rodriguez play two brothers who are crafting a new play about family, fiddles and demons. But are these memories or fantasies? Whose story is this? The connections they make surprise them both.

"Strings is both a drama about a memory of a nightmare and a comedy about a nightmare of a memory. Terrence Beswick's latest play holds a mirror up to itself, and in so doing becomes simultaneously poetic, hilarious, and haunting," says director Caldon, who last year also directed Beswick's tragicomedy about crystal meth in the gay community, hotshot.

For tickets ($15 general, $12.50 students/seniors, $10 groups of 10+), the public may call 800-838-3006 or visit www.brownpapertickets.com/event/63628.

A portion of all ticket sales from Strings will be donated to Community United Against Violence.

ABOUT THE COMPANIES

Guerrilla Rep, dedicated to staging innovative and provocative new works from Bay Area playwrights, is presenting Strings as its third production in residency at Mama Calizo’s Voice Factory. Previous productions included Terrence Beswick's hotshot and John Caldon's Third Eye: the b-side monologues.

Below are excerpts from reviews for Guerrilla Rep's 2008 production of Beswick's hotshot:

“...offers an inside view of life with crystal methamphetamine, and it looks pretty realistic... tells a graphic yet claustrophobic tale of three gay men whose lives are torn apart by their addiction and destructive behavior." - SF Examiner

"...a well-written, intensely driven glimpse of life in San Francisco... It's creepy, suspenseful and darkly comic... None of this is lost on the audience, who are close enough to share the intensity of each moment." - SF Bay Times

"These drug-ravaged lives resonate with authentic detail... director John Caldon keeps it kinetic even when the dialogue merely simmers, and the cast displays admirable commitment to the emotionally taxing scenario." - Bay Area Reporter

"The playwright, Terrence Beswick, has written a taut, frightening play about what addictions can do to you… And yes, there are times when you want to turn away – but you can't. As a playwright, Beswick has an undeniable future as one of the best of his generation." - beyondchron.com

"This struggle for power and control is one of the most interesting themes of the play... darkly humorous... riveting drama." - The Daily Californian

"...the play deftly examines how internalized homophobia and isolation have led to staggering rates of meth addiction in the gay community. The relentless scrutiny and gritty, frenetic pacing lend the show a cinematic aura." - SF Weekly
